Overscan issue using HDMI output

My laptop is an early 2013 retina Macbook 15 inch model, which has two mini display outputs and one HDMI. I normally extended my desktop to two external monitors via the settings below:

- Monitor#1: Sony 19 inch <-- DVI input <-- DVI cable <-- DVI-miniDP converter <-- miniDP port <-- Macbook

- Monitor#2: HP 21 inch <-- DVI input <-- DVI-HDMI adapter <-- HDMI cable <-- HDMI port <-- Macbook

I don't have any issue with above settings.

Recently I bought a 23 inch Asus monitor with HDMI and VGA ports. When I hooked up this monitor just using HDMI, my Macbook recongised the monitor as a TV, so the image appears to be over scanned, i.e., some lines of the image are outside of the screen display range. I have to manually tune the scaling in the preference. I also tried my friend's 27 inch ViewSonic monitor using HDMI connection, same overscan issue. Further, I extended my Macbook desktop to an Apple TV using airplay, same overscan issue! The Apple TV is connected with a 50 inch TV using HDMI.

However, when I disconnected the Asus monitor and re-connected my Monitor#2 (see setting above), the image is squeezed and showed 'outside of frequency range' warning. The problem can be fixed after a reboot. Why?

I'm wondering such overscan issue is related to Macbook's HDMI output? And any suggested fix for my Asus monitor so that it can be correctly recognized as a PC monitor rather than a TV? Or I can force a PC monitor mode?
